Martlets: 36 Days Of Christmas

This Christmas, Brighton & Hove charity Martlets is asking you to give the gift of care to local families with its first ever Christmas fundraising appeal - the 36 Days of Christmas.

Based around an Advent calendar, the campaign shows supporters how the hospice prepares for the festive period and cares for local families from the beginning of December right through to twelfth night.

Just £25.26 will pay for an hour of a nurse’s time caring for a patient over the festive period. If you would like to give the gift of care this Christmas click here to find out more about the campaign.

Ward Sister, Jaimie Wilson, explains more about Christmas at Martlets. “Our goal is to give everyone we care for the best possible chance for a Christmas full of joy, positivity, and togetherness – all the things we’d want for ourselves and our loved ones.

“It all starts on 1st December, when the wonderful staff from Legal and General come in and decorate our hospice and garden. It’s like a winter wonderland out there – the patients’ bedrooms all look out over the garden and the beautiful lights give everyone a lift.

“The weeks leading up to Christmas are very busy for us. As well as our main role of providing expert, compassionate nursing care, we will also ensure we support our patients and families with all the things that are really important to them during the festive season.

“So we’ll help with Christmas card writing and our volunteers will go out with patients to do some Christmas shopping. Often, they’ll make a trip to Toys ‘R’ Us in Hove to get something for the children or grandchildren; we’ll even help wrap the presents and keep them hidden until the big day!

“Sometimes, when it’s needed, we’ll bring Christmas forward to allow a patient and their loved ones to celebrate Christmas early.

“Our Hospice at Home nurses will make extra visits to patients over the holidays, so that they can spend the festive period at home. Where we can we try to get our in-patients home; even if it’s just for a few hours on Christmas Day itself.

“And, of course, there’s always a buzz about the place on 25th December – the hospice really does have the most special atmosphere – we buy and wrap a little gift for every patient.

“The hospice is bustling with friends and families coming in and often the family pet comes too! It’s a tradition that the nurses dress up on Christmas Day and there’s always a festive theme. We sing carols and enjoy lots of chocolate and mince pies. Our dedicated catering and housekeeping teams come in early and always deliver a wonderful three-course Christmas dinner with all the trimmings.

“Every member of our team will work a few shifts over Christmas; we all contribute, because we know we can go home afterwards to our own families.

“We are incredibly grateful for all the support of the wonderful people of Brighton & Hove.  Your generosity is what makes Martlets the remarkable place that it is.”
